laikipia camp and travel

Isolated, huge (21,000 square miles), little visited, the Selous Game Reserve is a haven for those seeking a slower paced safari than that experienced in the northern circuit. The game is more elusive here - you will have to search harder for results but you also will not encounter many other people.

Statistically speaking, however, the Selous is game rich. It is home to approximately 50,000 elephant which accounts for about half the total elephant population in Tanzania. Buffalo number in excess of 100,000 and there are a goodly number of lion and leopard. The largest population of wild dog resides here as well - in excess of 1,000. Crocodiles and hippos inhabit the river areas.

This is a grand destination for those seeking a more relaxed safari experience. Due to the area's tropical climate (hot and humid most of the time), you will journey at a much slower pace. Think short morning walks or outings on the Rufiji River, long, relaxing afternoons ending with a game drive in the late afternoon or enjoying sundowners on the river.
